Will the Apple Car be a BMW?
Apple’s previous attempt at a relationship with BMW had stalled. In effect, it still looks like the iCar could indeed be running on a BMW chassis and motor.
For many, the iCar has long been an inevitable move for Apple. Previous speculation had put Apple working with Tesla, but then news broke of a visit by Tim Cook to BMW headquarters. From there, things seemed to go nowhere fast. A source had told news outlets, however, that the agreements had stalled in part due to Apple’s desire to explore its own car manufacturing options first.
It appears that although there is nothing currently in the works, talks will likely be revived with BMW later on if Apple determines it will be better to go with a veteran automaker. Another contributing factor to the uneasiness between the companies is that BMW is looking to avoid becoming a mere supplier, and so has been shy about showing its manufacturing process to Apple.
For Apple’s part, the company appears serious about moving into the automotive business. With nearby Google pioneering in the artificially intelligent car market, perhaps Apple’s role will be provide smart cars that merely aid smart drivers.
What do you think? And when will we see the first iCar?
