Wanna Take a Road Trip?

Published

on

After many blasts and sounds of gunfighting on the streets of Harare in Zimbabwe, it seems that the army finally has things under control.

The 93 year old dictator Robert Mugabe is under house arrest for trying to set up his wife, AKA Gucci Grace, as the next leader. The military has seized control over the state media and is preparing for the first regime change in the countries modern history.

With the extremely volatile nature of cryptocurrencies, it’s difficult to view Bitcoin as a safe haven asset. But if you happen to live in a currency-less country in the midst of a coup that has ATM withdrawals capped at $20 a day, the worlds global digital currency seems to provide the only stable alternative.

One bitcoin is now going for about $12,499 in Zimbabwe’s markets. Anybody down for a road trip?

Market Overview

The mild selling attitude that was observed on Wall Street has been completely reversed by Asian investors this morning. The Dow Jones fell 0.65 yesterday, which isn’t much but it is the biggest decline since September. After a big pushback, the China50 and Nikkei 225 are up more than 1.3% today.

This sudden surge in stocks comes as the currencies and commodities markets remain rather docile. There’s plenty of news events on the calendar today that could change that though and of course, all eyes are on Washington DC and the NYSE.

Sneaky Politics

Donald Trump’s Tax bill is expected to pass a vote in the House of Representatives today but it is very likely to fail in the Senate. Republicans took a bold move and tried to squeeze the “repeal of Obamacare” right into the tax cuts plan.

The new clause we will remove the fine for Americans who don’t purchase health insurance, a move that would basically render Obamacare impotent and topple the insurance companies. Sneakily, it would also reduce the effect of the tax bill on the long-term US deficit enough to allow House Republicans to pass the bill without the Democrats’ approval. Though this could be seen as progress, they’ve only brought themselves one step closer to a brick wall when the bill hits the Senate.

The promise of reduced corporate taxes has brought the stocks up quite significantly over the past few months and nobody really knows how well the prospect is currently priced into the markets. With the next Fed meeting a month away and earnings season almost over, this political drama is taking the center stage in American markets.

Crypto BattleGround

Over the past 24 hours, the value of all cryptocurrencies in circulation has risen by an outstanding $5 Billion and the entire market is now worth $220 Billion. Bitcoin itself has added $8.2 Billion to its market cap and now trading at $7,375 on eToro.

After the unification brought on by the cancellation of the Segwit2x hard fork and the quick rejection of the notion to replace BTC with BCH, the first and most popular digital currency is now asserting its dominance over the market.

However, the next $300 could prove very difficult ground to reclaim. There are generally less buyers when the market is near the top and it would require a breakout of the all time highs in order to generate new interest from new buyers.

The sugar rush on the 2x cancelation caused the price to spike as high as $7,872 (orange circle) so everything between the previous high (blue) and the all time high should be considered battleground territory.

How You Could Profit From The Fairfax County Investment In Morgan Creek Digital

Published

on

Morgan Creek Digital recently scored what it says is probably the first investment in the known crypto asset universe from a U.S. pension fund.

Two pension plans in Fairfax County, Virginia are anchor investors in a new $40 million venture-capital fund, according to a statement from the company. Other investors include an insurance company, a university endowment and a private foundation, said Morgan Creek Digital founder Anthony Pompliano, who declined to provide further details.

Fairfax County Retirement Systems manages three separate defined benefit plans, two of which invested in the Morgan Creek Digital fund, said Pompliano. Katherine Molnar, chief investment officer of one of the funds said in a statement that blockchain technology is an “emerging opportunity” that offers an “attractive asymmetric return profile.’’

Morgan Creek Digital, which is an affiliate of the investment manager Morgan Creek Capital Management LLC, exceeded its original target of $25 million for the fund. Its pitch: all traditional assets will eventually be represented by digital tokens, while the influx of intellectual capital into digital assets will create positive returns. It also argues that cryptocurrencies are not correlated to traditional assets, giving investors unique exposures.

The fund created by Morgan Creek Digital in New York is investing in cryptocurrency giant Coinbase, which was recently valued at $8 billion, and several lesser-known startups, including Blockfi, RealBlocks, TrustToken, Harbor, Open Finance Network, CityBlock Capital, Namebase, Good Money and Digital Assets Data.
As much as $4 million of the investment could eventually be used to purchase cryptocurrency directly, though that has not happened yet.

This sort of development is crucial for the digital asset markets to evolve. Let’s take a closer look at Morgan Creek Digital’s other blockchain companies, and see if there might be equity or token opportunities.

CityBlock Capital

CityBlock Capital offered a digital security token sale on the SharesPost platform, representing perhaps the lowest-barrier investment opportunity for someone looking to tag onto the Fairfax County investment in Morgan Creek Digital.

CityBlock’s NYCQ Blockchain Infrastructure Fund invests in companies building blockchain-based capital markets infrastructure. From the instantaneous settlement of trades, elimination of intermediaries, and the reduction of fraud, the fund’s portfolio companies include clearing houses, exchanges, depositories, makers of market aggregation tools, securities services firms, data analytics, smart contract auditors, and issuance platforms. Its focus is early-stage firms, with ten percent of its funds going to late-stage companies.

CityBlock’s digital tokens are designed to represent ownership interests in the fund. Investors will be able to buy and sell these assets on SharesPost’s Alternative Trading System (ATS), which is registered with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission.

TrustToken

If you’re looking for a stablecoin, this Morgan Creek Digital-backed option might be a nice tool to escape crypto-volatility. TrustToken’s first token is TrueUSD, a stablecoin redeemable one-to-one for U.S. dollars. Over its initial four months of trading, the coin’s market increased to $85 million as investors look for stability in the unstable world of crypto. The token has a $61 million hard cap on the token allocated over three tranches of $0.12, $0.14 and $0.16 per trust token.

In the TrueUSD system, dollars are kept in the escrow accounts of multiple trust companies, not a bank account. Those accounts verified by an independent third party that issues monthly reports on the funds held in collateral.

Blockfi

In need of liquidity and have a lot of crypto you could put up as collateral? Blockfi is now operating in the US, and could be the business solution you need. BlockFi is a New York-based secured non-bank lender of  USD loans to cryptoasset owners who collateralize the loan with cryptoassets. Blockfi iquidity is available to both individuals and institutions. Client Bitcoin and Ether is held with a registered custodian. Loans are issued in USD to their bank account.

BlockFi currently operates in 35 US States, lending to retail investors and companies. It raised approximately $1.5 million in seed funding earlier this year from ConsenSys Ventures, SoFI and Kenetic Capital, followed by Galaxy Digital Ventures investment of $52.5 million. $50 million, the lion’s share of the capital, will be used to loan to BlockFi’s customers. The remaining $2.5 million represents an equity investment in the company from Galaxy and earlier backers.

Namebase

Namebase offers probably the most unique idea in which Morgan Creek Digital invests. This platform enables the registration of top-level domains on the Handshake blockchain. As a fork of Bitcoin, Handshake allows users to register domain names. Registration records are maintained by a decentralized network of nodes. Handshake is compatible with the existing domain name system. It is easily integrated with mainstream browsers.

Handshake uses the Bitcoin software with some extra transaction types allowing users to bid on names on-chain. Handshake forked everything about the Bitcoin node software while not forking the UTXO set, like in the case of Zcash. The Handshake project plans to distribute 70% of the coin supply to open source developers, projects, and non-profits without any contractual expectation of work.

Bakkt

The Bakkt Bitcoin Daily Future is a physically delivered daily futures contract on Bitcoin traded in BTC/USD. It’s still subject to regulatory approval, but ICE plans for them to be traded on its electronic trading platform which is regulated by the CFTC. ICE Clearing US, the main counterparty for all ICE cleared forex futures trades, will clear and guarantee all trades, to be settled in physically delivered Bitcoin “in the regulated Bakkt Warehouse.”

Bakkt raised $18.2 million to develop a global digital assets platform and a bitcoin futures product. Owned by Intercontinental Exchange (ICE), which in turn is owned by the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE), Bakkt’s investors include Boston Consulting Group, Galaxy Digital, Goldfinch Partners, ICE, M12 (Microsoft’s VC fund), Pantera Capital and Protocol Ventures.

Digital Assets Data

This financial technology and data company build enterprise-grade software and data feeds for crypto hedge funds and other market participants. The companies data, information and transparency tools will be applied to crypto assets, including currencies, platforms, applications, side chains, security tokens, and initial coin offers (ICOs) through subscription services offered to hedge funds and other institutional investors.

Harbor

While companies like Polymath stole much of security token show in early 2018, Harbor’s blockchain-based platform and compliance protocol has also been built to transform private securities like commercial real estate offerings an investment funds into more liquid forms of private investment.

This institutional-grade onramp for issuers and investors is an end-to-end service. Investor on-boarding to the platform encompasses KYC, AML, accreditation and tax forms, signing of documents, funding, and other tasks. The Harbor compliance protocol manages complex rules and regulations governing securities on issuance and secondary transfers.

Open Finance Network

Created in 2014, The OpenFinance Network (OFN) uses blockchain technology to create an U.S. regulated security token platform. “We wanted to give users the control over their funds. Since with security tokens, there is a lot of overhead holding tokens on a centralized platform. So to put capital to better use, we went with self-custody. We are not entirely decentralized though, and we think this is attractive to all types of users.”

Open Finance Network is comprised of the ledger, the token and the adaptors. Open Finance’s a global registry of assets that are represented by security tokens as well as entities such as broker-dealers, transfer agents, custodians or escrow agents that can be used on different security token processes.

Good Money

Good Money is a new type of banking platform founded by Gunnar Lovelace. When a new customer signs up with Good Money, they receive an equity share – in other words, they become co-owners. Lovelace says customers could hold as much as 70% one day.

Good Money operates similar to a credit union, which are non-profits, and offers members no ATM or overdraft fees. 50% of its profits are invested into green projects and charitable donations. The platform’s customers vote on where profits should be invested, but the options will only include sustainable investments, like clean energy and reforestation efforts.

RealBlocks

RealBlocks is creating a real estate capital markets platform designed to connect users globally so they can more easily raise capital for real estate. Built on the Ethereum blockchain, the platform allows organizations to raise capital through the issuance of tokenized securities.

On the platform, investors can directly purchase ownership interest in real estate with digital and fiat currencies. The platform also claims to provide a mechanism for peer-to-peer liqudity. According to RealBlocks, “anyone in the world is now able to directly invest, raise capital, and obtain liquidity for investments in real estate.” The platform also provides a mechanism for peer-to-peer liquidity. By using RealBlocks, anyone in the world is now able to directly invest, raise capital, and obtain liquidity for investments in real estate.

Conclusion

“There’s a belief in the institutional world that if the industry will be around for a long time, it will be very valuable,’’ Pompliano said in a phone interview. “The smart money is not distracted by price but looks at the long-term trends, and believes they’re betting on innovation as a great way to deliver risk-mitigated returns.’’

Today, even police officers and other state employees in Virginia’s Fairfax County are now looking forward to retirement with potential dividends from bitcoin. Two separate pension funds that collectively manage $5.1 billion in assets for the state’s police force and other employees have joined a $40 million investment in the Morgan Creek Blockchain Opportunities Fund.

If you look at the startups in which Morgan Creek Digital is invested, there are few token options. Using TrueUSD to hedge your crypto-investments offers one opportunity to augment your investment strategy. More interestingly, the CityBlock Capital security token represents an alternative to other VC-backed securities tokens, such as Blockchain Capital’s BCAP.

Return of the Bitcoin Maximalist? Crypto Winter Luring Even More Institutional Capital than Before

Published

on

Bitcoin’s price crept higher on Saturday, as the leading digital currency found renewed support near $3,600 following a week of mostly tepid moves. Although the bear market is showing little signs of letting up, Grayscale has declared the return of the ‘bitcoin maximalist’ following a dramatic surge in investments during the fourth quarter. Could this mean that the worst of the downturn has passed?

Return of the Bitcoin Maximalist

Grayscale, the cryptocurrency asset manager most famous for the GBTC Bitcoin Trust, saw an influx of investment capital during the fourth quarter of 2018 – a period known simply as ‘crypto winter’ or ‘crypto nuclear winter,’ depending on who you ask. During the quarter, the Grayscale Bitcoin Trust brought in an average of $2 million per week, the company said in its most recent quarterly report. The number dwarfs the average weekly investment for all other cryptoassets, which stood at just $300,000.

The sheer dominance of bitcoin relative to its altcoin peers led Grayscale to declare the “return of the bitcoin maximalist.” Bitcoin attracted “the most capital within the Grayscale family of products despite further price declines in the digital asset market,” the manager said. “In the fourth quarter, 88% of inflows were into Grayscale Bitcoin Trust, while 12% were into products tied to other digital assets.”

Total investment into Grayscale products reached $359.5 million in all of 2018. The average weekly investment for all products stood at $6.9 million, with the Bitcoin Trust attracting $4.7 million of that total.

Profound Shift Underway?

The shift from retail to institutional investor was also highlighted in the quarterly report. Two-thirds (66%) of the total funds invested during the year came from the institutional investor class. A deeper dive into the investor profiles reveled that 40% of the total amount invested in the fourth quarter came from retirement accounts.

These data points – the rise of the institutional investor and the influx of retirement savers into the digital currency space – reinforce two important trends: (1) the average bear-market investor is patient (i.e., they have a multi-year time horizon); and (2) institutions are building strategic positions in crypto, having used the 2018 downtrend to bolster their positions.

Interestingly enough, it was just last week that Morgan Creek Digital, a leading crypto asset manager, announced that two pension plans became anchor investors in a $40 million venture-capital fund. In other words, retirement planners are beginning to view crypto as a long-term investment vehicle.

Nowhere is this more apparent than in Virginia, which is where the two pension plans are located. Combined, they accounted for $21 million of the $40 million invested into Morgan Creek Digital’s fund. More on this story: Virginia Police Department Reveals Why its Pension Fund is Betting on Bitcoin.

BTC/USD Update

Bitcoin clawed back above $3,600 on most major exchanges Saturday even as trade volumes declined. The bitcoin price rose 1% to $3,603.76 on Bitfinex, where it was in close proximity to the 50-day moving average. A clean break above this level could generate sustained bids for the digital currency as it attempts to carve out a higher trading range. The relative strength index (RSI) shows the price has positive momentum, based on the daily chart.

At current values, bitcoin has a total market capitalization of $63.8 billion. That accounts for 52.6% of the overall market. The combined market cap of all assets was $121.2 billion, according to CoinMarketCap.

Crypto Update: Another Spike Fails in Crypto-Land

Published

on

The major cryptocurrencies continue to follow the pattern which consists of sudden spikes followed by choppy sideways periods. Today, the top coins jumped higher, with the strongest currencies testing their recent swing highs, but the move quickly failed. The market continues to be dominated by low liquidity and the bearish long-term forces, making it difficult to make money trading the long side.

That said, the short-term break-outs, which were formed one week ago, remain intact and our trend model is also on short-term buy signals in the case of the relatively stronger coins. Despite the buy signals, traders should remain cautious with new positions, as the long-term forces continue to work against bulls here.

The leadership of last week’s move continues to be weak and without a new batch of coins hitting new short-term highs, it’s hard to see what could propel the market higher. The top 3 coins haven’t been able to pull their weight either, so odds clearly favor the continuation of the bear market from a broader perspective.

BTC/USD, 4-Hour Chart Analysis

Bitcoin remains stuck below the $3600 level despite today’s spike, and the bearish drift that started last week in the coin continues. BTC’s relative weakness is a negative sign for the whole segment, and although it’s still above the support/resistance zone just north of $3450, the long-term setup continues to point of the $3250 and $300o support levels.

That said, the short-term buy signal is still in place in our trend model, and traders could open small, speculative positions in BTC, with strong resistance zones being ahead near $3850 and between $4000 and $4050.

XRP/USDT, 4-Hour Chart Analysis

Ripple has also been showing relative weakness in recent days, and today it dipped back below the key $0.30 support/resistance level following the failed rally attempt. While the coin once again avoided a move towards the next main level of interest at $0.28, it is still likely to violate that level and test the August low near $0.26.

With that in mind, traders should stay away from XRP, with our trend also being on short- and long-term trend signals, and barring a move above $0.32, the immediate outlook is also negative, with further resistance levels ahead near $0.3550 and $0.3750.

Litecoin Tests $44 Level Again as Ethereum Clings to $120

LTC/USD, 4-Hour Chart Analysis

After settling down near the $41 price level, last week’s star LTC spiked as high as $44 today, but it failed to break-out above the key resistance zone. While the break-out remains intact and the MACD indicator still only points to a correction, the market-wide trends remain negative, and the previously leading coin hasn’t shown signs of relative strength in the last couple of days.

Traders could still hold their positions here even though a swing low is not yet confirmed, but strict rsik management rules should still be applied. A move back below $38 would trigger a downgrade in our trend model, which is still on a short-term buy signal. Above the initial resistance at $44, further levels are ahead near the recent swing high near $46 and at $51, while support below $38 is found near $34.50 and between $30 and $30.50.

ETH/USD, 4-Hour Chart Analysis

Ethereum has been trading in a narrow range today and the recent short-term swing high capped the rally attempt in the second largest coin. While the coin is still holding on to most of its gains from last week, trading well above the $112 level, the lack of bullish follow-through is a negative sign even regarding the short-term outlook.

The hostile long-term setup raises the odds of a failed short-term rally, and although pour trend model remains on a short-term buy signal, traders should only consider small, speculative positions here. The $120 level continues to be at the center of attention, with another strong resistance above that being found near $130, while further support is found in the $95-$100 zone.
