Video: Build Your Own Calculator
In the following video, using some relatively inexpensive parts and a bit soldering, you can build your own calculator. Obviously this is a novel purpose, but hardware hacking should start at the basics. This video is not exactly meant to change your life. It can be said that hardware hacking improves people’s lives, however, especially when they are able to use it to improve technology for the disabled.
The calculator makes use of the Raspberry Pi. The Raspberry Pi has become relatively cheap as newer versions have come out as well as competition. Presumably other do-it-yourself and maker hardware, such as Arduino, could also be made into a calculator if programmed correctly. The Raspberry Pi clearly allows for a much more scientific calculator with a wider variety of input. The same project could easily be done with a Beaglebone Black.
Ben Heck has some much more advanced videos that we’ll be posting as time goes on.
