Valve Reveals the Reason behind Steam Mishap on Christmas: A DDoS Attack

Valve has revealed that its Steam store was struck with a DDoS (Distributed Denial of Service) attack on Christmas, an attack which eventually resulted in the reason behind the exposure of thousands of users’ account data among the gaming community.

The most popular PC gaming store of them all ran into trouble recently, on Christmas of all days. Steam users were able to see other users’ account data including phone numbers, email addresses, purchase histories and even partial credit card details. Gamers’ Woe: Steam Suffers Mishap on Christmas to Expose User Information

Steam, the online game store, delivered users anything but a Merry Christmas when last minute shoppers found themselves getting directed to other users’ accounts, giving them access to other people’s personal information such email addresses, credit card information and home addresses. Gaming community websites were abuzz with frustrated users and Valve, Steam’s creator, did little to assure users they were getting the malfunction under control.

The service was back to normal late in the day, but as of Saturday evening, many users were not satisfied the matter was handled properly and worried that many peoples’ personal information was compromised.

Steam Hacked, Accounts Compromised, People Blaming Valve

According to various sources, Steam was hacked and accounts were compromised recently. Gamers have reported losing their accounts. All signs point to a problem with Valve, the owner of Steam. A mixture of social engineering and stupidity on the part of Valve – many of the accounts hacked simply had password resets. This shows the weakness of the current password system at Valve.

If a large database is that vulnerable to anyone who want to hack it, then things can go awry for Steam. Gamers might start considering other options that are out there.
