Ukraine Power Grid Hack, All May Not be What it Seems

Reports are coming out on The Register that challenge the current finger pointing by Ukraine’s SBU state security service implicating Russia as the protagonist behind hacks on western Ukraine’s utility companies. This is not the first twist in the December Ukrainian power utility hacking story covered by Hacked.

It all started shortly after the December attack. iSIGHT Partners, a global cyber threat intelligence company, reported that malicious code had affected at least three regional Ukrainian operators. The media, picking up on this, heralded the first known instance of malware causing a power outage.

Ukraine To Scrutinize Cyber Defenses Following Attack On Airport Linked To Russia

A cyber attack on Kiev’s main airport, Boryspil, has prompted a review of Ukrainian computer system defenses, including airports and railway stations, according to Reuters. Officials told Reuters the attack came from a server in Russia.

Officials detected malware last week in a computer in the airport’s IT network. The malware is similar to that which attacked three power utilities in late December.

While there is no suggestion the Russian government is involved, the attacks have occurred during a period of bad relations between Ukraine and Russia. There has been a two-year separatist conflict in Eastern Ukraine.

Hacker Causes Big Power Outage In Ukraine

Three regional Ukraine power authorities suffered a malware attack that caused hundreds of thousands of homes to lose power last week, according to ArsTechnica. Nearly half the homes in Ukraine’s Ivano-Frankivsk region lost power, according to the Ukrainian news service TSN on Dec. 23, one day following the failure. The malware disconnected electrical substations.

iSIGHT Partners, a global cyber threat intelligence company, found malicious code samples that affected at least three regional operators. The destruction could mark the first known instance of malware causing a power outage.
