ICO Analysis: SelfKey

SelfKey is offering a blockchain-based SSID identity system to help people take full control of their own identities.

The project also includes an integrated financial services marketplace, which allows users to access (at launch) over 250 products and services using their certified identity documents.

SelfKey’s digital identity management system allows its users to own, control and manage their digital identity. It brings decentralization to identity management by allowing users to store their ID attribute and documents on their own device, and not on SelfKey’s server or the blockchain. Users can then decide what, when, and with whom they securely share these ID attributes and documents. No one else has access to this information without the user’s consent. This is something SelfKey terms “self-sovereign identity”.  

The SelfKey network includes an Identity Wallet (which allows users to request ID documents certifications) and Marketplace (which allows users to buy products and services).

The KEY token will play a critical role in running the SelfKey ecosystem since all the products and services (a few listed below) are available through KEY as a nominal payment. For example, KEY can be used to pay for request attestations and for marketplace listings, as well as receive identity claims.

Each member in the ecosystem plays a role in engaging the system and using KEY.

A few of the products and services include:

  • Bitcoin and Digital Asset Exchange Signup
  • Citizenship by Investment programs
  • Citizenship through Investment in Real Estate Applications
  • Company incorporation (including companies limited by shares, foundations, LLC’s and Trusts)
  • Bank account introduction and application
  • Residence Permit Applications for more than 50 countries
  • E-Wallets or Stored value facilities
  • Gold and Precious Metals purchase and storage
  • International insurance applications
  • Money Remittance & Transfer services

The Team:

According to the company: “The project team of SelfKey encompasses a group of highly experienced innovators who are passionate about identity and its future, as well as some of the industry’s brightest legal and business minds.”

Upon visiting the site, there are no links to more information about the team members.

That being said, there is plenty of company-related information such as videos of Founder Edmund Lowell giving talks about identity protection at various FinTech conferences.

Although there is a lot of press around the project, I’d like to see a better attempt at transparency about the people who will ultimately be using your money to make this project happen.

Tokens (KEY) and Distribution:

The whitepaper does a great job of explaining the concept and goals of the project, but it’s not so hot on explaining the ICO token sale information.

This is likely because we’re still a long ways away from the actual ICO, but here’s some information I managed to find.

  • Token name: KEY
  • ICO Launch Date: Jan. 15, 2018
  • Price: 1 KEY = 0.015 USD
  • Platform: Ethereum
  • Soft cap: 2,500,000 USD
  • Hard cap: 21,780,000 USD

 

The project seems to be currently in the “private pre-sale” stages, which is a great opportunity to get a better return than the actual ICO. It just makes setting a benchmark for what you can expect come ICO time a little difficult.

Risks:

  • As with the vast majority of other projects, there is a multitude of competitors out there. While SelfKey does have the advantage of being one of the first movers of blockchain-based identity protection, it’s still far from the first. Projects such as Civic (CVC) have already been around and seen some substantial growth, seeing upwards of a 3.5x spike in price in just a few weeks. -2
  • The whitepaper was lacking. While the whitepaper does a good job at describing what the project is attempting to accomplish, there’s not much chewy information about the team or the tokens that will be issued. This is likely due to the project being in its early stages. -3

Growth Potential:

  • Identity protection is already a huge necessity, and it will continue to grow as the world becomes increasingly more integrated with the digital landscape. What was once solely social security number (or other government identification) based now includes a much wider breadth of identifiers from social media to email. +2
  • Decentralized identity eliminates the risk of a central server being hacked for your precious information. With SelfKey, users and organizations can avoid Equifax-scale data breaches. +2
  • It’s early in the game for this ICO. The ICO is scheduled to launch on January 15th, 2018, and now’s a great opportunity to get into the private pre-sale, or to at least get yourself into the loop for any future pre-ICO sales. +3
  • The costs of identity verification for banks and other organizations are only increasing, and SelfKey can help minimize them. Additionally KYC law compliance is mandatory for virtually anyone who handles user information: the long list including coin exchanges, fintech startups, money transmitters, real estate companies and agents, precious metals dealers or storage facilities, fiduciaries, corporate services providers, lenders, banks, securities firms, lawyers, accountants, nonprofit foundations, professional service providers, notaries, governments, insurers, re-insurers, financial institutions, and generally any legal entity or natural person dealing in money or finance. The average annual, recurring cost of KYC compliance is USD 60 million for the average bank, but may be up to USD 500 million for others. +2
  • An identity verification solution like SelfKey could help banks not only curb costs, but speed up the process. +2

Disposition:

My disposition reflects that the project is in its early ICO stages and that there’s still some groundwork to be laid before it’s properly introduced to the public.

However, since it is fairly early, investors have a better shot at getting much more favorable investment terms during the private pre-sale.

Taking all of this into account, we land at a +6 for this project. While I do want to see a better attempt at providing team information in the whitepaper, my scam alarm bells aren’t going off. The project has received significant press and the founder has been active in the security protection space for quite some time.

On that basis, we arrive at a score of 6 out of 10.

ICO Analysis: Unboxed Network

Companies spent an excess of $5 million for a 30-second spot in last years Super Bowl, which gathered 105 million viewers. Kim Kardashian recently told a story about how, out of respect for her husband, she turned down a $1 million marketing offer. All she had to do was make one Instagram post to her 119 million followers, promoting a knockoff Yeezy brand.

Kim’s sister Kylie uses her 120 million Instagram followers to sell her own products, which has earned her nearly $1 billion. There is clearly a lot of untapped power in influencer marketing, and companies are catching on.

According to the whitepaper, businesses spend $36 billion a year on Facebook ads alone. A lot of that is wasted because they can’t reach their target demos. Unboxed Network (est. 2014) puts these businesses in contact with specific target market micro-influencers that match what they are selling.

“The aim of the Unboxed Network is to offer the simplicity of Facebook Ads combined with the cost efficiency of an influencer marketing campaign, all on a single platform.”

Here’s how it works:

  • Any advertiser that wants to launch a campaign puts funds to escrow and provides their goals and influencer criteria (interests, location, gender etc).
  • Unboxed takes that info and plugs it into their blockchain oracles backed by AI, to invite the best matching social media influencers to get engaged with the campaign.
  • The influencers who get invited to the campaign create some sort of photo or video content that gets reviewed and approved by the blockchain oracles.
  • Influencers then post the approved content for the target market to engage with.
  • The influencers and oracles are then paid for posting and engaging

Micro influencers are so great for marketing because they are followed by people who trust their opinions. A certain percentage of Kylie’s followers will literally buy anything she puts in front of their faces. Unboxed already have thousands of micro-influencers in their network. And although they don’t have as many followers as Kylie, the followers they do have are real and trusting. Instead of paying one giant celebrity a fat check to run a single ad, brands will use Unboxed system to run their ads through special oracles that use AI to sift through their tens of thousand of micro-influencers to find the best influencers to match their specific campaign. Hitting the target market every time.

Token

NBOX token is based on Ethereum. It is what gives brands access to the platform, and what all micro-influencers are paid in.

Token holders gain exclusive offers from brands and will be able to exchange tokens for branded good and services. They can also use them to  access to the platform’s influencer took-kit.

Verdict

The Unboxed Network is the only freemium platform that allows businesses to launch high quality and low-cost word-of-mouth campaigns within seconds. Here are some of their current and past clients.

Risks

  • Standard Ethereum risks. They do acknowledge this in their whitepaper, though: “Due to the increasing supply and adoption of new Blockchains like EOS, Stellar etc. that could potentially offer the necessary functionalities in a more efficient and/or less expensive way, we may consider using alternative solutions to the Ethereum blockchain in the future.” -1
  • It’s very common for online companies, such as this one, that have been around a few years, to do an ICO for their “new decentralized blockchain” business. 99% of them have failed or are currently struggling. -1
  • The token use case is pretty weak and doesn’t seem to stable. -1
  • The coolest part of their project, the oracles, aren’t even complete or operating at all yet. -3
  • Their roadmap is a joke. They already failed to deliver the oracles in early 2018. -2

Growth Potential

  • Brands “pay 50% less per engagement: no middlemen, no fees, no management required. Increase your return on investment (ROI) on your social media spend.”+2
  • According to their whitepaper, they are successfully operating in 10 markets, and already have a strategy in place for global expansion. They have researched and ranked countries based on a wide range of criteria and will be using their information to facilitate growth over the next 3-4 years.+2
  • “There are no limits to the number of accounts a company can have or the number of campaigns they want to run. With Unboxed, scope is limitless.”+3
  • Influencer marketing is booming because it’s so effective. According to Tomoson, businesses are making $6.50 for every $1 spent.+4
  • They have been around since 2014. And have a leg up on the competition. +3

Disposition

There is no doubting the effectiveness of influencer marketing. Can Unboxed actually create and implement their unique AI-powered oracle solution? Well, that’s the million dollar question. 6/10

Verdict

Svandis in trying to create a much needed product. Although there are several resources for traders and cryptoanalysts, there is no comprehensive, full and easy to use the one-all tool.

Risks

  • A lot of tokens will be released after the token sale without any corresponding demand for the product itself. -1
  • Token economics is there, but without business processes costs and product prices it is hard to determine token appreciation potential. -1
  • Big competition from centralized platforms. However, the biggest issue by far with any centralized approach to supposedly verify and offer impartial information review is the ability to purchase a sponsored listing to bypass many necessary vetting processes and procedure. -1
  • Hard cap is way too big as per current market. -1

Growth Opportunity

  • Svandis is focusing on bringing transparency to the crypto market; protecting cryptocurrency users from deceit in the market. Quite a noble and necessary goal considering how much fraud and not transparency exists in the space. +2
  • The project tries to bring a value of decentralization in the space again. +1
  • Business model is clear – sources of income:
    1) Subscription to analytics products (including both “pay-to-go” and “hold-to-go” models) – B2B & B2C;
    2) Sponsored advertisements from businesses/entities who want to present themselves to our audience (all ads will be marked as an advertisement; we will never sell a paid rating or a similar schematic) – B2B;
    3) 3rd Party Marketplace +2
  • Partnership with Cindicator. Cindicator will become the first client of Svandis, integrating the Svandis data and features into their platforms and solutions for investors and market forecasters. Such product integration will help to catch Cindicator’s 110,000+ analysts audience, as well as more than 15,000 clients – and this will act as a springboard for our product and overall visibility and traffic. +2
  • The team is rather experienced in software development and business. +1
  • Roadmap looks realistic and adoption will be soon. +1

Disposition

Svandis is building an interesting community driven product. The team has experience and the product is not that hard to actually execute. However, there is a big competition in the space from traditional platforms in the long-term. From short-term, project has a big hard caps for such kind of project, small hype and tokens without any lock-up, which could result in a bad short-term performance. 5 out of 10

ICO Analysis: NODVIX

The existence of censorship on content is a brute fact of the modern world. Although this is arguably justifiable on moral grounds in some cases, often it is used for economic and/or political reasons by governments and corporations and the ordinary people usually have none to very little power on this decision. Several countries such as China, Iran, Saudi Arabia, and Singapore are known for extensive restrictions implemented on Internet usage.

This contradicts with freedom of speech and expression and the NODVIX team provides a broadcasting platform, similar to YouTube but without KYC procedures and governmental interventions, enabling people to reclaim their right to free speech. Instead of appealing to any governmental criterion of content restrictions or bans, NODVIX is self-regulating as people acting as master-nodes restrict or ban content. Still, as what counts as illegal content differs from one jurisdiction to another, it is not clear how any confusion over such definitions would be dissolved.

The platform is designed to be live 24 hours a day and this is incentivized by a reward mechanism. Any profit made by several streams of revenue such as advertisement will be distributed among actors on the platform.

  1. Original content creators or uploaders get 83%.
  2. Supported torrent nodes get 8%. Staking NDVX tokens are a requirement to become a supported torrent node.
  3. Unsupported torrent nodes get 2%. They are not asked to stake NDVX tokens, but they get a lesser cut of one-fourth.
  4. The platform gets the rest, using 5% for marketing and 2% for platform development.

The platform works in the following way: Firstly, a visual media, whether it is a music video, news story or a film, or anything with a frame rate is uploaded to the platform by its creator or uploader. Then advertisers provide appropriate banners which are then checked by torrent nodes. A hash file which contains also wallet addresses where profits will be sent is created and stored by torrent nodes. Ads take their place in content and the content is broadcast to the platform, placed into specialized categories. Then it is available for users to watch whenever they’d like. It should be noted that as torrent nodes play a quite important role, they can choose not to broadcast some content.

Token

The platform’s internal currency, NDVX, is used by an advertiser to pay for advert airtime, by original content creators and uploaders to receive in return for their efforts and by supported torrent nodes to stake. As people who stake their NDVX tokens get a higher percentage of profits than who do not, we can say that there is sufficient holding pressure for the token.

The ICO investor should note that the base price is 8,000 NVX for 1 ETH though this is only for the last twenty days of the ICO. The sale is structured that early birds pay less ETH per token as an investor will get 15,040 NDVX for 1 ETH, almost 90% more tokens for the same cost. It should worry him or her that during the pre-ICO, contributors get 24,000 NDVX per ETH, making the pre-ICO price 200% over the ICO base price. Also, the more ETH one invests in, the more NDVX tokens he or she gets as a bonus. Thus, we can safely say that anyone considering to participate in the token sale should either hurry up or wait until the token hits exchanges.

The total supply of NDVX tokens are yet to be determined, but they will be distributed according to the following.

  1. 75% pre-ICO + ICO
  2. 12% team
  3. 9% reserved
  4. 4% bounty

It is another source of worry that team tokens are locked for 6 months, a shorter period of time than most ICOs. No information on how the team is planning to use the token sale proceeds is made public yet.

Below is a breakdown of the risks and growth potential of NODVIX.

Risks

  • Team members’ LinkedIn pages do not show their previous working experience. (-2)
  • Token metrics do not favor the later ICO investor much. (-2)

Governmental intervention over the content on the Internet gets tighter and tighter every single day. People living in places like China, Iran, Saudi Arabia, and Singapore experience this phenomenon in their day to day lives. In response, the NODVIX team provides a broadcasting platform similar to YouTube where original content creators and uploaders provide visual media and get paid in return. As the platform will be live 24 hours a day, people who will supply and verify the content data are incentivized to do so through a stake-and-reward mechanism. It is a bit hard to evaluate the project’s value in terms of return on investment as team members’ LinkedIn pages contain very little information, yet a working demo already exists and can be found at the top of the main page. It is quite praiseworthy that Windows, Mac, and Linux versions are available. Token metrics do not favor the late ICO investor as the early bird catches not only the worm but also great bonuses. Anyone planning to participate in the sale should hurry or perhaps wait until the token hits the market. NODVIX receives a 2.5/10.
