Don’t Worry #EDM Fans – You Can Still Search Your Favorite Instagram Hashtag

edm-hashtag-instagram-find-banned-pornography-find-nudity-girls-sceneInstagram recently confirmed to Vice Media’s THUMP that #EDM hashtags are now unsearchable on the social media giant owned by Facebook. Due to the hashtag propagating pornographic and offensive posts on the picture sharing social media website, Instagram made the decision to disallow its users to search for the “#EDM.” Rumors regarding the ban began circulating on August 5, and an Instagram spokesperson confirmed this to THUMP via email:

“We block (i.e. make unsearchable) certain hashtags when they are consistently being used to share images and videos that violate our Community Guidelines. In this case, #EDM was being used to share content that violates our guidelines around nudity.”

Instagram is working on minimizing the inconvenience of the policy.

“We’re working on a way to more quickly restore certain hashtags that have previously been blocked,” the spokesperson added. “We’re also working on ways to better communicate our policies around hashtags.” As THUMP points out, a search term must reach a certain threshold to be banned:

“That’s also why hashtags like #asstomouth, #butthash, or #swingingdicks (you’re welcome) have not been banned—pornographic content associated with those terms just hasn’t reached the critical mass needed for them to get dumped into Instagram’s trash can.”

To be certain, there remain ways in which to search  “#EDM” on Instagram. Hacked compiled a list of the most popular online websites still enabling this function.

  1. Findgram – The self-proclaimed original online tool to search for Instagram hashtags and users. Find and explore Instagram photos, including #EDM photos.
  2. Iconosquare – Iconosquare works with your Instagram account to grow businesses on social media, effectively interacting with your followers. The website also allows you to search Instagram hashtags.
  3. Gramfeed – Gramfeed is a website for viewing Instagram Photos via various search options, including by tags, location, users and more.
  4. Tagboard – Tagboard uses hashtags to search for posts on networks like Twitter and Facebook, as well as Instagram.
  5. – This website allows you to search Instagram on the web, just like the other ones, by keyword.

So, don’t worry #EDM fans – or those who want to post pornography under the hashtag – you have recourse.
