Bitcoin Cash Added to Brave Browser on Request: BCH Price Up 11%

Bitcoin Cash (BCH) gained 11% leading into Saturday, coinciding with the general market surge which saw Bitcoin (BTC) cross $11,000, and the global market cap hit $332 billion.

The coin may also have gained positive sentiment from its sudden and unexpected addition to the Brave Browser. After making a request to Basic Attention Token (BAT) and Brave co-founder Brendan Eich, Bitcoin Cash was added to the browser within hours.

Bitcoin Cash Added to Brave Browser

It took around 8 hours in all between a Bitcoin Cash developer sending out the following tweet and BCH being added to Brave. User @DavidShares bemoaned the fact that upon testing out the Brave Browser, he couldn’t fund it with BCH.

“Finally getting around to downloading and using @Brave! It’s really cool, but now I’m highly disappointed that I can’t fund my wallet with Bitcoin Cash (BCH)! @BrendanEich can you review? I’m sure a lot of Bitcoiner’s will want to use BCH too with Brave.”

Brave and BAT co-founder Brendan Eich got involved in the thread, where it was put to him that many people aren’t using Brave because it lacks support for their favoured coins. Eich proposed users should choose Brave regardless, for reasons other than crypto support:

“Why wait? Are you using Chrome right now? Baseline Brave requires no crypto at all. You should be using Brave for speed safety battery life and many other reasons. As Chrome does not integrate BCH, it seems you are not comparing apples to apples.”

The original tweeter drove home the point that without support for the coin he uses, he had no incentive to use the browser:

“The incentives drive people. I’m [currently] not incentived (sic) to use Brave Rewards if I can’t fund it with BCH. If I’m not going to use Rewards, I’m less inclined to use Brave and just continue with Chrome.”

A few hours later, and Eich returned with some unexpected news: BCH will be added to Brave in the next update. That adds BCH to a small list of coins which can be used for tipping and payments on the Brave Browser.

From start to finish the process took less than a day. Eich will no doubt be inundated with tons of requests from various sects of the crypto faithful in the next few days. A discussion was immediately triggered in the comments regarding the wisdom of adding Bitcoin SV (BSV).

Update V0.68 is expected to hit Brave on August 20th.

More conservative estimates on OpenMarketCap place real trade volume at $200 million.
